Member of the Society for Baseball Research (SABR) since 1999. He has researched baseball history in Puerto Rico for the past twenty-two years. In 2003, he was appointed Official Historian of the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League.
Inducted in two sports halls of fame: Santurce and Rio Piedras. He has a Lifetime Pass to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown for his contributions preserving baseball history. Author of seven books, one short film, and Editor of beisbol101.com and negroleaguerspuertorico.com.
Tom Van HyningWriter
Tom Van Hyning grew up in Santurce, Puerto Rico. His family moved to this beautiful Island from the Washington D.C. area when Tom was two. Tom is the author of Puerto Rico’s Winter League and The Santurce Crabbers.
He is a Tourism Economist for the state of Mississippi and a member of the Cool Papa Bell Chapter in Mississippi. Tom’s articles have appeared in SABR’s National Pastime, Baseball Research Journal and beisbol101.com.
Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, but with Cuban roots, Raúl discovered his love for baseball thanks to his father. He had the privilege of being coached in the little leagues by Juan and Félix Guilbe, former Negro Leagues players and legends of the Ponce Leones.
He began his career in photojournalism in 1996, being the official photographer for the Ponce Leones baseball team during the 1997-1999 seasons. He graduated from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico in 1999. In 2000.
He moved to the state of New Jersey where he continued to work sports photojournalism in his spare time. He is a writer for the Spanish language Baseball website Con las Bases Llenas. He published the biography of Puerto Rican baseball super star Francisco “Pancho” Coímbre, Los Bates Grandes Se Respetan, in January 2019. Currently he is the president of the Francisco “Pancho” Coimbre Foundation.
